Google’s AI search features claim to drive billions of clicks weekly, but publishers seek clarity on open-web traffic and measurement

Google's head of search, Nick Fox, stated that AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search send billions of clicks to websites every week, and that overall Google Search continues to send billions of clicks daily with growth. However, publishers and third-party studies suggest that AI-driven search may be changing traffic distribution, and Google has not provided click-level data in Search Console for AI features.
What happened
Nick Fox wrote on LinkedIn that Google is "now sending billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features in Search alone" and that the features are designed to connect people to websites. He added that overall Search continues to send billions of clicks daily and that usage is growing. Liz Reid, VP of Google Search, reshared the post and emphasized ongoing improvements to make links easier to find in AI features.
Despite these claims, third-party observations paint a different picture. A recent zero-click study found that Google now sends only 27.6% of its clicks to the open web, and the Pew Research Center has noted declining click-through rates. The Press Gazette reported that Google Search traffic could halve by Q3 2027. Google has disputed these studies, calling them flawed, and maintains that clicks are stable.
Google has also introduced AI performance reports in Search Console but deliberately excluded click data. The company says it is "continuing to work with website owners to understand what insights will be most helpful to inform their strategies" and does not consider clicks the right metric for those reports. This leaves publishers without direct visibility into how AI features drive traffic to their sites.
Why AI builders should care
For any builder whose product or content depends on Google Search referrals, the shift to AI-driven search is a direct business risk. If AI Overviews and AI Mode answer queries without requiring a click, traffic to publisher sites can drop even if Google's aggregate click numbers remain high. The lack of transparent click measurement in Search Console makes it impossible to attribute traffic changes to specific AI features, forcing builders to rely on indirect signals or third-party analytics.
Builders who create content, tools, or services that rank in traditional search results need to understand how AI features surface links. Google has made efforts to improve link visibility with preferred sources, top stories in AI Overviews, and recipe improvements. But without click data, optimizing for AI search is guesswork.
Practical implications
Publishers should prioritize being selected as a preferred source in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google has indicated it is iterating on link placement, so content that is concise, authoritative, and directly answers user queries may have an advantage. Builders should also monitor overall traffic trends and correlate them with Google's AI feature rollouts, even without granular click data.
Third-party tracking tools that can measure clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode exist, as noted in the Search Engine Roundtable article. Investing in such tools may provide the missing visibility. Additionally, builders should diversify traffic sources to reduce reliance on Google Search.
Caveats
The "billions of clicks" figure is based on Google's own statements and has not been independently verified. Third-party studies show conflicting data, and interpretations of what constitutes a click from AI features may vary. Google's Search Console AI reports exclude clicks, so publishers cannot directly validate the claim. The New York Times recently published a piece titled "Google Is Building an A.I. Fence Around the Internet It Once Championed," highlighting concerns about the openness of web referrals. Builders should treat Google's claims as directional but not actionable without their own measurement.
