Google Cloud and Accenture deploy on-site AI engineers to accelerate enterprise adoption of Gemini Enterprise AI

Google Cloud and Accenture have formed a joint unit called the Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group, putting up to 1,000 forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) on-site at enterprises to build custom AI applications on the Gemini Enterprise platform TechCrunch. For AI builders, this signals that enterprise AI adoption is shifting from API access to hands-on deployment partnerships, with implications for how AI tools are integrated and scaled in complex environments.

The new unit lives under Accenture, and Google will train up to 1,000 of the consultancy's FDEs to work directly with clients TechCrunch. These engineers will plan and build custom AI applications on the Gemini Enterprise platform, aiming to resolve the deployment bottlenecks that have kept many enterprises from seeing clear ROI on their AI investments.

This is Google Cloud's latest move in a broader FDE race. Rivals including OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Amazon have all launched similar units TechCrunch. Independent firms like Ode (working with Anthropic) and OpenAI's The Deployment Co. are also pushing bespoke AI deployments, threatening traditional consultancies like Accenture itself.

Why the on-site model matters for AI product teams

For builders shipping AI products into enterprises, the FDE model changes the integration path. Instead of relying solely on APIs and documentation, enterprises get engineers who can customize workflows, handle data pipelines, and build agentic applications on the Gemini Enterprise platform. This could accelerate time-to-value for complex deployments, but it also means that platform lock-in and consulting relationships become more central to adoption decisions.

Google Cloud's enterprise AI spending share is still small relative to competitors. According to August data from Ramp, Google accounts for roughly 6% of enterprise AI spending among Ramp's U.S. customers, compared to Anthropic's 43.5% and OpenAI's 39.7% TechCrunch. A Google spokesperson noted that Ramp's data may undercount large strategic deals with major enterprises that go beyond model API usage.

What this means for deployment and consulting ecosystems

Google Cloud has been expanding its FDE model aggressively. Earlier this year, it launched a $750 million partner ecosystem commitment that embedded Google's own FDEs across Capgemini, Cognizant, and Deloitte TechCrunch. It also struck a multi-year partnership with CVC Capital Partners to deploy FDEs into the investment firm's portfolio companies. The Accenture deal adds a major delivery channel with global reach.

For consultancies, the trend is clear: they are building FDE practices to stay relevant. Accenture already has similar programs with Microsoft, ServiceNow, and SAP TechCrunch. The risk is that specialized AI deployment firms could undercut traditional consultancies on speed and focus.

The open questions: ROI, competition, and execution risk

Despite massive infrastructure commitments (Alphabet's purchase obligations reached about $811 billion as of June 30), enterprise AI ROI remains uncertain TechCrunch. The FDE model depends on whether on-site engineers can consistently deliver workflows that save or make money. It also assumes enterprises will pay for bespoke deployments rather than self-serve API integration.

Competition from independent AI deployment specialists and other hyperscalers could fragment the market. The success of the Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group will depend on the quality of the trained FDEs, the flexibility of the Gemini Enterprise platform, and the willingness of enterprises to commit to long-term deployment partnerships.
