
Egypt's Nvidia-powered AI data centre plan tests regional infrastructure bets and energy realities

Egypt plans to build its first large-scale AI data centre, a 200 MW facility worth about $1 billion powered by Nvidia GPUs. Egypt announces $1bn AI data centre with Nvidia GPUs
The project was announced by Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hindi. The full 200 MW build is valued at roughly $1 billion, with an initial 20 MW phase costing around $200 million to be built over three years. The construction consortium brings together Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric, and Cassava Technologies, Nvidia's main partner in Africa. The data centre will "leverage Nvidia accelerated computing technologies" according to Cassava Technologies, making Nvidia the core GPU supplier.
The announcement followed Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Cairo, during which Huawei was reported to have bid on building an Egyptian AI data centre. After Xi left, Minister Hindi met with a "US consortium of data centre developers", according to state media, signaling Washington's push to counter Chinese influence in the region. Egypt wants to become a "regional data centre hub" through international partnerships.
What the project means for AI builders in the region
The planned facility would be one of the few large-scale AI data centres in Africa, a region where AI infrastructure rollout has been slow partly due to weak electricity grids. For builders who need local compute for latency-sensitive inference or data sovereignty requirements, a Nvidia-powered data centre in Egypt could reduce dependence on European or US cloud regions. However, that benefit is years away even if the project proceeds on schedule.
The phased approach (20 MW first, then scale to 200 MW) is practical for testing grid integration and demand. But the energy challenge is serious. AI data centres consume up to five times more power than traditional data centres, and Egypt has struggled with an energy deficit for years. Reliable power is not guaranteed, and the cost of powering a 200 MW facility could strain the economics of the project.
Caveats builders should watch
This is an early announcement with many uncertainties. The funding, final partnership structure, and GPU procurement details are not fully public. The geopolitical tug-of-war between US and Chinese suppliers could affect Nvidia hardware availability or force redesigns. Egypt's grid constraints may delay the 20 MW phase or cap its utilization. The project also faces the same kind of community and regulatory scrutiny that has triggered backlash against AI data centres in the US--a warning signal for any large-scale deployment in a region with growing environmental awareness.
