Claude Code for macOS adds live iOS app testing via interactive simulator pane (local sessions only)
Published by AINave Editorial • Reviewed by Ramit
Claude Code for macOS now lets developers build, launch, and test iOS apps directly in an interactive simulator pane within Claude Code Desktop, as reported by 9to5Mac and MacRumors. The feature, available in public beta, is designed for Pro, Max, and Team plan users and requires Xcode with the iOS platform installed.
What happened
Anthropic announced that Claude Code Desktop v1.24012.0 or later can open in-progress iOS projects in the iOS Simulator pane when Claude is instructed to build, run, or check an app. Claude can watch the simulator live, interact with it via taps and swipes, and iterate on changes while the pane remains open alongside the conversation. The simulator pane drives the simulator directly, so it does not need computer use and never takes over the user's screen. From the CLI, Claude reaches the iOS Simulator through computer use instead, controlling the simulator on screen like a mouse. The feature is Mac-only because Apple's iOS Simulator runs only on macOS, and it works only in local sessions; cloud and SSH sessions cannot access the simulators on the user's Mac.
Why AI builders should care
Inline iOS testing inside the coding environment reduces context-switching between IDE and simulator, potentially speeding debugging cycles for iOS-focused projects. The feature demonstrates how AI tooling is extending beyond code generation into live app testing within the developer's own hardware. The local-session requirement implies privacy and security considerations but also limits access in cloud-based or remote workflows.
Practical implications
Users must have macOS with Xcode installed to access the iOS Simulator pane in Claude Code. The feature is available in Claude Code Desktop on macOS and is currently described for local sessions only. The capability aligns with Pro, Max, and Team plans per reporting. Documentation notes that the simulator pane runs the simulator directly and does not hijack the user's screen. Anthropic provides official instructions for granting Claude access to a device and managing sessions.
Caveats
The evidence base is centered on a feature announcement; implementation details may evolve as public beta progresses. The feature is currently focused on in-device testing within Mac environments. Users should be aware that screenshots of the device in iOS Simulator are sent to Anthropic and kept per standard conversation retention settings, and Anthropic advises against signing in to real accounts on a device Claude uses.
