University of Florida AI curriculum: a blueprint for AI literacy across all disciplines

The University of Florida has built one of the most ambitious AI education programs in the country, embedding artificial intelligence across all 16 of its colleges rather than confining it to engineering or computer science. Backed by a $95 million investment from Nvidia, Nvidia cofounder Chris Malachowsky, the university, and the state, the program now offers more than 200 AI courses and has hired 100 new faculty to teach AI in fields ranging from hospitality to geological sciences. The $95M infrastructure bet

The program's backbone is the HiPerGator supercomputer, funded through a partnership with Nvidia. Malachowsky, a UF alumnus, pushed the school to think bigger than a new engineering building: he asked what the university would do with an AI supercomputer. The answer was to teach AI across the curriculum. The initial investment covered the supercomputer, 100 new faculty positions, and course development. Employers are already demanding AI skills: more than one third of entry-level jobs listed AI skills as a requirement in a spring 2026 report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, up nearly threefold from the previous year.

The hard part: academic integrity and student skepticism

UF's AI-forward stance has not been frictionless. Academic misconduct reports mentioning AI rose from zero in fall 2021 to 66 as of April 2025, according to public records. Some professors have stopped assigning homework and grade solely on in-class exams to prevent AI misuse. A survey of over 1,000 students across 203 institutions found that 40% worry AI is reducing their ability to think independently, and only 7% said they were "all in" on AI. At UF, students have expressed concerns about AI's environmental impact and feel less ownership over their work. The university's response includes an international AI-education summit that drew nearly 500 attendees from 10 countries and 40 US states in 2026, where it shares its blueprint and discusses ethics.
