How Content Credentials Work in Google Messages
Content Credentials are metadata embedded in media files using the C2PA specification. Google Messages reads this data and surfaces a "How this was made" section when credentials are present. Depending on the file, you may see labels like "captured using a camera or microphone," "edited using AI," or "edited using non-AI tools." If the app cannot confidently distinguish AI editing, it may show "possibly edited with AI." If no credentials are attached, the section does not appear at all.
What It Does and Does Not Tell You
The critical distinction: Content Credentials show provenance, not truth. A file labeled "captured with camera" could still be staged or misleading. A file without credentials could be completely authentic. The absence of credentials does not prove authenticity. The feature also cannot detect AI-generated content that was never tagged with credentials. This means it is a useful clue, not a verification system.
