OpenAI and 100+ companies warn of imminent AI-powered cyberattacks on critical infrastructure

OpenAI and more than 100 companies across banking, tech, and cybersecurity have signed an open letter warning that AI-powered cyberattacks could become widespread within months, potentially targeting hospitals, water utilities, and other critical infrastructure. The coalition, which includes Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Hugging Face, calls for an immediate global defense push before frontier models outpace existing protections.
What the open letter demands
The letter outlines three priorities: make cyber defense an immediate leadership priority, continuously test defenses against frontier cyber capabilities, and strengthen existing tools with AI. It also urges governments to give critical infrastructure operators access to capable defensive AI, authorized testing, and hands-on support. The signatories include not just AI companies but also financial institutions like Capital One and Visa, signaling broad industry alignment. OpenAI specifically called for imposing costs on attackers and building tools to track AI agent usage.
Why AI builders need to pay attention now
For teams building AI products or deploying agents, the letter signals a shift in the threat model.
