Fortinet Acquires Virtue AI for Runtime Protection and Automated AI Validation

Fortinet acquired Virtue AI, a startup specializing in AI runtime protection and automated validation, to strengthen its ability to secure autonomous AI agents and applications across the full lifecycle. For teams building agentic systems, the deal adds real-time visibility into AI agents, MCP tool scanning, and continuous red-teaming that previously required separate tooling.

Fortinet's acquisition of Virtue AI fills a gap in agentic AI security

Virtue AI, founded in 2024, provides a platform that Fortinet says will extend its existing Security for AI portfolio, which includes the FortiGate Hyperscale Firewall and FortiAIGate. The cybersecurity giant said the acquisition will strengthen protection for AI models, applications, and agentic systems from development through runtime. Fortinet CEO Ken Xie stated that Virtue AI's technology will advance the company's vision for "continuous AI assurance," helping customers govern and protect AI systems throughout their lifecycle at enterprise scale.

What Virtue AI's Guardian Agent brings to the table

The core technology is Virtue AI's Guardian Agent, which provides visibility into AI agents and tools running within an environment. It scans Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools and source code for hidden security risks and monitors agent behavior. The platform includes automated red-teaming of autonomous AI agents across more than 50 sandboxed environments and 14 high-stakes domains, including simulated prompt injection and MCP-based attacks against leading agent frameworks. Testing covers hundreds of attack vectors and more than 1,000 risk categories. The system also enforces real-time security guardrails across text, images, video, audio, and AI-generated code.

Fortinet says these capabilities complement FortiAIGate, which was introduced earlier this year to protect large language models from risks such as prompt injections, data leakage, model poisoning, and excessive resource consumption. The acquisition extends that protection to the broader agentic AI attack surface, including prompts, models, agents, MCP tools, APIs, and AI infrastructure.

What remains unknown about the deal

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, though Fortinet said the consideration is "immaterial" to its business. The integration timeline and specific product roadmap have not been detailed. The deal comes as Gartner projects the market for securing AI ecosystems and AI agents will grow from $2.8 billion in 2026 to $16.4 billion by 2030, a forecast Fortinet points to as evidence of growing demand. For builders, the key question is how quickly Virtue AI's capabilities become available as part of Fortinet's existing firewall and security platform offerings, and whether the combined solution will be offered as a standalone product or integrated into FortiGate and FortiAIGate.
