
Equinix Turns the Network Into the AI Inference Control Plane

Enterprise AI is moving from training to inference, and the hardest question is no longer about GPU supply but about distribution: Where should inference actually run? Data sits across multiple clouds, models, and regions. Agentic workflows span proprietary and open-source systems.
At its first Horizon event, Equinix addressed that question with two services: Fabric One, an intent-driven managed connectivity service, and Equinix Inference Exchange, a distributed inference offering built with Nvidia Enterprise architectures and Together AI. Together they turn Equinix's global interconnection footprint into an adaptive control plane for AI.
Fabric One: Intent-Driven Connectivity for Distributed AI
Fabric One lets customers describe the outcome they need -- a secure, low-latency link between a data source, an inference provider, a cloud application, and an edge location -- and the platform composes the underlying routing, encryption, redundancy, and failover as a single managed service. It uses open connectivity specifications developed with AWS and Google Cloud. Customers can submit requests via portal, APIs, automation workflows, agents, or natural-language prompts, and the network continuously validates policies.
Chris Audie, Equinix's chief product officer, said the old model of building connections one at a time doesn't scale in a world of distributed AI. Fabric One is expected to enter beta later in 2026, with general availability in 2027, initially in North America.
Inference Exchange: Pre-Staged Nvidia Inference Close to Data
Inference Exchange combines Nvidia Enterprise Reference Architectures, Together AI's platform (supporting over 200 open-source models), and Equinix's data-center and interconnection network. It supports both multi-tenant and dedicated single-tenant deployments. Availability is targeted for Q1 2027.
The offering directly addresses inference economics. Training can run in centralized clusters, but inference sits on the live path of applications, customer interactions, and agents. Latency, data movement costs, and sovereignty requirements make proximity critical. Equinix CEO Adaire Fox-Martin stated that "where compute runs is becoming as important as the compute itself." Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang reinforced that the world of AI will be fundamentally uncentralized, with compute near sensors, customers, and factories.
Why This Matters for AI Builders
The shift from centralized inference to distributed, near-edge inference changes how builders architect applications. A manufacturing system may need millisecond responses near the factory floor. A regulated financial service may need inference within a specific jurisdiction. Agentic workflows will dynamically coordinate multiple models and services across clouds and locations. That requires a network that is programmable, policy-aware, and responsive.
Equinix operates more than 280 data centers across 77 metros, provides 230 cloud on-ramps, and interconnects over 10,500 businesses. The company reports that eight of the top 10 AI model providers and nine of the top 10 AI clouds have active deployments on its platform. That density gives Equinix a neutral position to reduce orchestration friction for enterprises running heterogeneous AI deployments.
What's Still Unknown
The timeline is ambitious: Fabric One GA in 2027, Inference Exchange in Q1 2027. Pricing, service-level commitments, and the depth of cloud-provider integration are not yet detailed. The success of the platform depends on execution: how well intent-driven networking simplifies real-world deployments without masking critical controls, and how broadly the model catalog integrates. Builder should watch for beta access and early reference architectures to evaluate the fit for their multi-cloud inference strategies.
