The Future of Work is AI-Enabled
Clara Shih believes that a fundamental shift in the job market has occurred, with every job now being an AI job. Once an executive at Meta and Salesforce, she experienced a turning point last fall when she observed Meta’s AI agents surpass some of her top employees in various tasks. This transformative moment led her to conclude, "You feel radicalized in that moment when you see it working." Recognizing the urgency to prepare the younger generation for this evolving landscape, Shih launched the New Work Foundation, a nonprofit focused on equipping Gen Z with the skills needed to thrive in AI-powered workplaces.
Why Was the New Work Foundation Created?
The New Work Foundation, launched in partnership with consumer brand Dear CC, aims to address the growing concerns about job placements for Gen Z. Many young workers, including Ivy League graduates, have reported increasing difficulties in securing employment due to the rapid rise of AI and changing job dynamics. As traditional paths to career success appear daunting amidst tightening job markets, Shih emphasizes the necessity of adapting to AI advancements. "If you want to find a job and if you want to keep your job, you need to learn how to get really good at using AI agents," she stated.
What Tools is the Foundation Offering?
To equip young professionals, Shih’s foundation has launched tools like Field Report and JobClaw. Field Report provides insights into various career paths, showcasing the number of job openings alongside the associated AI automation risks. For instance, a look into the legal field reveals 31,500 open roles in the U.S., but also highlights the significant threat posed by AI disruption. Conversely, JobClaw focuses on connecting job seekers to opportunities aligned with their strengths without needing a résumé. This is accomplished through a simple five-question intake form, making it easier for young job seekers to navigate their options in a rapidly changing market.
What Are the Concerns About AI in the Workforce?
Despite the promise of AI-enhanced job functions, there are growing concerns regarding its impact on employment. A recent Gallup poll illustrates that Gen Z's sentiment toward AI has become increasingly negative over the past year. Influential figures in the tech industry are divided on AI’s role: while some, like Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei, warn of a potential disruption to half the white-collar workforce, others, such as Nvidia's Jensen Huang, envision a collaborative future where AI becomes a companion to human labor.
Is There Hope for Gen Z in an AI-Dominated Economy?
Shih remains optimistic about the future. She believes that those who voice their moral objections to AI are crucial for shaping the technology's path. "The people who have moral objections to AI are actually the people that I want involved, making sure that we steer these systems in the right direction," she explained. As the landscape of work continues to evolve, the New Work Foundation strives to prepare Gen Z with not only the tools but also the mentality needed to ensure they remain integral to this new future.
In a world where work increasingly intertwines with automated processes, Clara Shih's initiatives emphasize readiness, adaptability, and the empowerment of a generation poised at the brink of significant change.
