
Project Lightwell gains networked patching with Palo Alto, expanding open-source protection

IBM and Red Hat's Project Lightwell, an open-source security initiative backed by a $5 billion investment and over 20,000 engineers, now includes Palo Alto Networks to add network-layer virtual patching. The collaboration aims to shorten the window between vulnerability discovery and protection to the same day, addressing a gap where traditional patching can't keep pace with AI-accelerated exploits.
What happened
Palo Alto Networks will deploy a virtual patch at the network layer to block exploit attempts while Project Lightwell follows up with software remediation for open-source components that customers can test and deploy. The combined approach is described as a "shield-and-fix" architecture. When a new vulnerability is discovered, network-level protections can be deployed the same day, reducing the time from validated discovery to protection.
"AI has compressed the window between vulnerability discovery and exploit from weeks to minutes. Traditional patching cannot keep pace," said Nikesh Arora, CEO of Palo Alto Networks. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna added that the collaboration extends security "from the source code directly to the network front lines."
Early adopters include Bank of America, BNY, Citi, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Mastercard, Morgan Stanley, Royal Bank of Canada, State Street, Visa, and Wells Fargo. The companies also plan to establish secure processes for sharing vulnerability information across participating vendors and security teams to accelerate coordinated vulnerability disclosure.
Why AI builders should care
For teams building on open-source components, supply chain vulnerabilities are a growing risk. Black Duck research indicates that 86% of codebases contain open-source vulnerabilities, and 81% of those are classified as high or critical risk. AI systems often depend on dozens of open-source libraries, making them vulnerable to exploits that can be weaponized in minutes.
Project Lightwell's shield-and-fix model offers a practical pattern: block at the network layer while a validated patch is developed. For AI builders, this could reduce exposure time from weeks to hours, especially for critical vulnerabilities in widely used packages like Log4j or OpenSSL. The initiative also aims to protect commercial applications, operational technology (OT) environments, and connected devices, broadening the scope beyond pure open source.
Practical implications
The integration means organizations can deploy virtual patches immediately upon vulnerability disclosure, without waiting for a code fix. This is especially relevant for AI systems that rely on many open-source dependencies and cannot afford downtime for emergency patching. The network-layer protection acts as a temporary block while Lightwell's agentic security methods validate and test fixes across a huge volume of open-source code.
However, network patching is not a substitute for code remediation. It only blocks exploit attempts that traverse the network, and it requires Palo Alto Networks infrastructure. The open-source remediation through Lightwell is available via commercial subscription, which may limit adoption for smaller teams.
Caveats
The initiative is still early, with only a few early adopters from financial services. The network patching covers only traffic that passes through Palo Alto Networks firewalls. No independent performance data or response time benchmarks are available yet. The $5 billion investment is over time, not a single spend, and the 20,000-engineer team includes existing IBM and Red Hat staff. Builders should evaluate whether the commercial subscription model fits their budget and whether their infrastructure can leverage network-layer virtual patching effectively.
