Gemini Notebook expands Google's AI research workflow with code execution and ecosystem integration
Published by AINave Editorial • Reviewed by Ramit
Google has rebranded NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, expanding its research tool with native code execution, secure cloud compute, and deeper integration across the Gemini ecosystem. For AI builders, this means a more capable, source-grounded analysis environment that now syncs across the Gemini app and Google Search.
What happened
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook as part of a broader push to align its AI products under the Gemini brand. The tool remains a standalone product focused on research but now includes a secure cloud computer that can write and run code natively against user-uploaded sources. This upgrade is available today for Google AI Ultra users and Workspace customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access, with a rollout to AI Pro users on the web planned in the coming weeks.
Notebooks now sync across the Gemini app and the standalone Gemini Notebook experience. Users can already create and access notebooks directly within the Gemini app, and Google plans to bring notebooks into AI Mode in Search but has not shared a timeline Google renames NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook and expands code execution to Pro users.
The tool traces its origin to Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023 and has since reached over 30 million people and 600,000 organizations.
Why AI builders should care
For teams building AI products or workflows on Google’s stack, code execution within notebooks opens a new way to perform data analysis directly from uploaded sources. Instead of exporting data to a separate environment, developers can run Python scripts against tables and documents inside the same notebook where they ask questions. This tightens the feedback loop between research and analysis.
The update also introduces new output formats including JSON and PowerPoint (PPTX), making it easier to generate structured reports and share findings across tools. Cross-app syncing with the Gemini app and Google Search means notebooks travel with the user, reducing friction in multi-step research workflows.
Practical implications
Developers can prototype data analysis pipelines directly from source materials without leaving the notebook. For example, uploading a research PDF and asking the notebook to generate a chart from embedded tables is now a single workflow. Teams can share notebooks across the Gemini app and potentially Search, enabling collaborative research and reproducible analyses.
The phased rollout means most builders should expect Pro-tier access in the coming weeks. Free-tier availability for code execution has not been announced. Pricing for AI Ultra and AI Pro follows Google’s existing subscription model, though specific notebook-only pricing has not been detailed.
Caveats
Code execution is limited to user-uploaded sources and does not browse the open web unless explicitly configured. Google has not committed to free-tier access for the code execution feature, and rollout timelines for AI Pro users are approximate. The tool’s behavior remains anchored to source-grounded reasoning, which limits its use for tasks requiring live web data NotebookLM just got a new name and a serious upgrade for Google AI Pro subscribers.
