Phonak EON hearing aids pack dual AI on a low-power chip for real-time speech and scene processing
Published by AINave Editorial • Reviewed by Ramit
Phonak launched the EON hearing aid platform, built around the HYPERSONIC processor that runs two AI systems simultaneously: a deep neural network for speech separation and a scene classifier for automatic adaptation. For AI builders working on low-power edge inference, this is a case study in how to fit real-time neural processing into a tiny wearable without destroying battery life.
Two AI systems, one chip, minimal power
The EON platform runs Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 and AutoSense OS AI 8.0 in parallel. The first uses a deep neural network to separate speech from background noise as it arrives. The second classifies the surrounding sound environment and adjusts which features are active, so the wearer doesn't need to switch programs manually when moving from a quiet room to a noisy street. Running both at once is the architectural challenge the HYPERSONIC chip was designed to solve.
Power efficiency that changes the form factor
Phonak claims the HYPERSONIC chip reduces power draw by 37% compared to the previous generation. That efficiency gain translates directly into physical design: the EON is 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the prior Sphere generation, and it runs for up to 38 hours on a single charge. For builders targeting wearable AI, this is the relevant metric: you can run two neural networks continuously on a device that fits behind an ear and lasts more than a day.
WindBlock 2.0 and connectivity
Wind noise gets its own dedicated subsystem. WindBlock 2.0 reduces wind noise by up to 50 dB and can improve the signal-to-noise ratio by as much as 30 dB, addressing a common outdoor complaint. On the connectivity side, Phonak positions EON as Made-For-All, meaning it pairs with any Bluetooth device rather than requiring a specific phone. It combines Bluetooth Classic, the company's Roger Direct wireless microphone protocol, and Auracast Bluetooth LE Audio. Auracast lets venues like museums or airports broadcast audio directly to an unlimited number of receivers, which is a practical improvement over legacy loop systems.
Configurations and availability
Phonak ships three configurations: Audéo EON Sphere and Audéo EON R for mild to profound hearing loss, and CROS EON R for unilateral loss, all in eight colors. US hearing care professionals could place orders starting Monday, with Germany, France, the UK, Australia, and other markets following in September. Pricing was not published, which is standard for a category sold through clinicians and shaped by national reimbursement schemes.
Caveats for builders evaluating the architecture
All performance claims come from Phonak's own testing. The company says wearers using Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 are twice as likely to understand every word spoken from any direction compared to the same aids configured without the feature. There are no third-party benchmarks available, and the device is fitted by professionals rather than sold directly, so independent validation will take time. For AI builders, the interesting part is the chip architecture that enables dual real-time AI on milliwatts. That design pattern matters more than the specific hearing aid application.
