Google Pixel 11 launch pushes Gemini into on-device agents and health tracking

Google's Pixel 11 launch today is less about hardware and more about making Gemini the central agent on your phone and wrist. The Pixel 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro XL ship with the Tensor G6 chip that Google says delivers up to 20 percent better power efficiency, and the Pixel Watch 5 gets new health features that use on-device AI to detect breathing emergencies and estimate metabolic trends. For AI builders, the important part is how Google is turning the Pixel into a platform for agentic, task-completing AI that runs locally and across apps.

What's new: more AI, same design

The Pixel 11 keeps the same 6.3-inch OLED display (1080x2424, 120Hz, 3,000-nit peak) and adds a slimmer camera bar with a 48MP main sensor, 13MP ultra-wide, and 10.8MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom. The Pro models push digital zoom to 120x and add a feature Google calls Instant Night Sight that captures low-light shots 4.5x faster. Base storage starts at 256GB (the 128GB option is gone), and prices begin at $899 for the Pixel 11, $1,099 for the Pro, and $1,299 for the Pro XL - a $100 increase for the top model over last year. The Pixel Watch 5 costs $399 (up $50). Pre-orders open today; shipments start August 20.

Gemini gets agentic

This year's software story is about Gemini acting as a background agent. U.S. users can ask Gemini to order groceries, book rides, or call businesses for reservations, with the ability to review transcripts and take over at any point. A new set of connected apps - including Granola, Otter.ai, Wix, OpenTable UK, and Zocdoc - will integrate with Gemini for cross-app tasks. The new Rambler dictation feature competes with Wispr Flow and runs on-device.

On the watch, Gemini works offline for simple tasks like timers and app launches, and Wear OS 7 surfaces real-time info like Uber ETAs and workout progress directly on the watch face. The most notable health addition is Breathing Emergency Detection, which triggers emergency calls when SpO2 drops near 83 percent for an extended period. Google also introduced Blood Pressure Trends and Insulin Resistance Trends as non-diagnostic wellness tools, rolling out in September to Pixel Watch 3 and later. The company says it validated its insulin resistance algorithm against blood draws in a peer-reviewed Nature study.

Google also launched Pixel Tag, a Bluetooth tracker for Android 9+ phones, priced at $30 for one or $100 for a four-pack.

What changes for builders

For developers shipping AI products, the Pixel 11 launch signals a clear direction: on-device agents are moving from demo to daily driver. Gemini's ability to call apps, transcribe, translate, and act on behalf of users means the phone itself becomes an inference and action platform. The watch's offline Gemini capabilities and health trend detection open new possibilities for edge AI in wearables, especially around preventive health alerts. The app integration list (Granola, Otter.ai, OpenTable, etc.) suggests Google is building an agentic task layer that other developers can plug into - worth watching if you're building productivity or automation tools.

Caveats to watch

Several features are staged. Watch health trends won't appear until September and are explicitly non-diagnostic - they're trend flags, not medical readings. Breathing Emergency Detection is pending FDA clearance in the U.S.. The offline Gemini performance on the watch was notably slower in demos. And while Google claims the Tensor G6 improves performance by 25 percent, those numbers are vendor-provided. Real-world battery life and agent reliability will depend on actual usage patterns.

Also note the $100 price bump for the Pro XL - component costs are driving up premiums across the board.
