GenAI.mil platform adds ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government for 1.7 million DoW personnel

The Pentagon's GenAI.mil platform just got a major upgrade. It now includes military versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and SpaceXAI's Grok, giving over 1.7 million military and civilian workers access to generative AI for unclassified tasks. This is a signal that the Department of War is serious about embedding AI into daily operations, from HR paperwork to supply chain analysis.

What GenAI.mil offers

Launched in December 2025 with a military version of Google's Gemini, GenAI.mil is a custom AI platform built for the DoW's secure environment. The new additions are ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, both cleared for Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5 (IL5). That covers the vast majority of routine, document-heavy work in the department.

Security and data handling

OpenAI states that ChatGPT Mil keeps all data within the DoW environment and does not use it for model training. Grok for Government follows the same security posture. For builders, this is a standard government cloud arrangement: the models run in the customer's secure boundary.

Capabilities and use cases

ChatGPT Mil is positioned for productivity gains in HR, logistics, and contracting. The Pentagon envisions personnel using it to process large volumes of documents in routine workflows.

Grok for Government brings deeper reasoning capabilities. It offers multiple reasoning levels: auto, fast, and expert. Use cases include market research analysis for acquisition professionals and supply chain management for logisticians, as well as faster mission planning.

Contract landscape and the Claude absence

The DoW awarded OpenAI and SpaceXAI contracts worth up to $200 million each. Google also has a contract from the initial Gemini deployment. Notably absent is Anthropic's Claude. A dispute over autonomous weapons and surveillance restrictions led to a public falling out. War Secretary Pete Hegseth criticized models that "won't allow you to fight wars," and Anthropic was later designated a supply chain risk, a move a federal judge recently ruled unlawful.

Rollout context and caveats

The expansion follows an aggressive push from Hegseth for an "AI-first" mentality. The initial Gemini rollout in December was reportedly hasty. DefenseScoop reported that a pop-up notification made some personnel wonder if they were being hacked. Hegseth's subsequent memo and social media posts clarified the initiative.

This is one of the largest government deployments of commercial generative AI. For teams building AI for enterprise or government, the key takeaways are the IL5 security certification, the multi-vendor procurement pattern, and the potential for scaling to the full 3 million-person workforce. The Claude exclusion also highlights the political and contractual risks of restrictive AI usage policies.
