Shopify Says AI Is Opening a New Era for Entrepreneurs

Shopify is positioning AI as a distribution and operations layer for small businesses. In an interview with CNBC, President Harley Finkelstein said traffic and orders from AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Gemini to Shopify stores tripled over the past year, while Sidekick handled 34 million conversations in the second quarter. For builders, the important shift is that Shopify AI for entrepreneurship is aimed at both customer discovery and the work required to run a store.
AI discovery is reaching beyond the usual bestsellers
Finkelstein said 75% of AI-driven purchases in the quarter came from product categories outside the top 100. Shopify presents that as evidence that AI-driven discovery can help long-tail and independent brands reach shoppers who might not find them through conventional search. The underlying claim is plausible as a product strategy, but the supplied evidence does not independently verify the attribution or explain how the categories were measured. The reported traffic, orders, and purchase mix come from Shopify's account of its own platform data.
This matters to AI builders because commerce discovery is becoming less dependent on a shopper typing a precise product query into a search engine. A merchant's product data, descriptions, policies, reviews, and fulfillment details may increasingly need to be clear enough for an AI system to interpret and recommend. That does not eliminate the need for differentiation. It changes where the first product impression may happen.
Sidekick reduces setup friction, but it does not replace merchant judgment
Shopify's Sidekick assistant is designed to help merchants onboard, launch, and manage their stores. Shopify reported 34 million Sidekick conversations in Q2 and said merchants using it during onboarding reach their first five sales more quickly. That is a useful adoption and outcome signal, but it is a company-reported correlation, not a controlled experiment showing that Sidekick caused the faster sales milestone.
For a founder or product team, the practical lesson is narrower than the marketing language: AI assistance is most valuable when it compresses repetitive setup work. Store configuration, inventory tasks, content drafting, and basic operational questions are reasonable places for an assistant to help. Product positioning, quality control, pricing, compliance, and customer trust still require human review.
What the business numbers do, and do not, show
Shopify reported gross merchandise volume near $116 billion and more than 30% GMV growth for the fifth consecutive quarter. Its shares rose about 17% after the results, according to the report. Those figures show strong platform activity and investor reaction, but they do not isolate the contribution of AI from payments, merchant additions, consumer demand, product improvements, or other factors.
That distinction is important for teams evaluating an AI commerce strategy. The evidence supports testing AI-assisted discovery and onboarding. It does not support assuming that adding an AI shopping interface will automatically produce a higher conversion rate or make a weak product competitive.
The best decision rule is straightforward: treat AI as a new acquisition and workflow channel, then measure it separately. Track qualified visits, assisted conversions, repeat purchases, support load, and the cost of serving those interactions. Shopify's results make the channel worth watching, while the missing independent benchmarks mean builders should validate the economics in their own category.
