Crash Course: Containerization in Practice

2-6 Jun, 26OnlinePosted 10 days ago

Overview

This intensive course introduces containerization concepts in a practical, hands-on format. Built around the core principles of Linux container technology and the Open Container Initiative standards, the program guides participants from a system level understanding to real world container deployments. The course emphasizes practical skills for working with Docker, building and optimizing container images, and orchestrating multi-container environments. Delivered online via Zoom, it is designed for a broad audience, including DevOps professionals, developers, QA, data engineers, and data scientists who want to gain a solid, working knowledge of container technology and its application in modern workflows.

Agenda / Format

The course comprises three online sessions, each approximately three hours long, spread across June 2, 4 and 6. Sessions are a mix of theory and practice, with live demonstrations, exercises, and concrete tasks to consolidate learning. The format combines lectures with hands-on labs, including isolation techniques and containerized app demonstrations, ending with a practical project that participants must implement and submit for a certificate.

  • Module 1 — Basics: How Containers Work
    • History of containerization from early LXC to Docker
    • What it means for a process to run inside a container and what is happening under the hood
    • Linux kernel basics that enable container isolation: Namespaces and Cgroups
    • The evolution of container ecosystems, OCI standards, and the role of container runtimes (containerd)
    • Practical exercise: process isolation via unshare and related isolation concepts
  • Module 2 — Docker in Practice
    • Structure of Docker images and how Dockerfiles are written
    • Containerizing a simple application and understanding lightweight images and distroless approaches
    • Debugging containers using logs, exec, and inspect tools
    • Image optimization with multi-stage builds
  • Module 3 — Containers as a System
    • Working with multiple containers and networking between services
    • Managing data and volumes
    • Orchestration basics with Docker Compose for local multi-container setups

Speakers / Mentors

Mentor: Denis Verveiko, Team Lead SRE MLOps, Temabit Fozzy Group. Denis brings 20+ years in IT with extensive DevOps and SRE experience, including leadership on large-scale platforms and cloud-native initiatives. His background includes deploying ML platforms on EKS and contributing to containerization strategies across teams.

Who should attend

The course is suited for professionals looking to deepen practical skills in containerization and to apply container-based workflows in daily tasks. Audience segments explicitly noted include DevOps engineers, developers (front-end, back-end, and full-stack), QA professionals, data engineers, and data scientists. The presentation language is Ukrainian, with English terms used where applicable.

Platform and materials

All sessions will be conducted on Zoom. Participants will receive broadcast links in advance, and recordings plus course materials will be accessible on the learning platform after each session. A preparation guide will be issued before the start, outlining the environment setup and a basic set of services to have ready for hands-on work. A practical task will be assigned at the course end to reinforce learning and qualify for the certificate, with a deadline set one week after the final session.

Outcomes

By the end of the course, attendees should have a clear understanding of how containerization works at a practical level, the ability to work with Docker effectively in everyday tasks, and the skills to design and debug a small multi-container system. Participants will gain tooling familiarity for rapidly provisioning a local development environment and for building robust containerized applications that can be more easily reproduced across teams and environments.

Additional details

The event runs as a three-session crash course with a stated price of 5600 UAH, offering access to nine online broadcasts (approximately ten hours of content), presentation materials, and the course recording for one year on the learning platform, plus a certificate upon completion. There are discounts and group options available, along with a focus on practical, hands-on learning and real-world applicability.
