
Huawei Ascend 960DT roadmap could reshape China's AI hardware strategy

Huawei has accelerated its AI chip roadmap, moving the release of the Ascend 960DT to early 2027 and outlining annual upgrades through 2029. For AI builders, this signals a potential shift in China's hardware supply chain, but the chips remain unproven against Nvidia's Blackwell.
The Ascend roadmap and Tau Scaling Law
At Huawei Connect, rotating chair David Wang announced the Ascend 960DT launch is now scheduled for Q1 2027, pulled forward from Q3 2027. Wang described a one-generation-a-year cycle, with Ascend 970 in 2028 and Ascend 980 in 2029. He attributed expected gains to the Tau Scaling Law, which he said will double compute specifications and improve memory bandwidth, capacity, and interconnect bandwidth across generations. The Tau Scaling Law is Huawei's framework for predicting performance gains, similar in spirit to scaling laws used by other AI hardware companies. Wang claimed it will drive not just compute doubling but also significant improvements in memory and interconnect, which are critical for large model training and inference.
Why this matters for AI builders
China's AI ecosystem has been constrained by US restrictions on Nvidia technology since 2022. DeepSeek's January 2025 model, for example, ran on older Nvidia hardware. If the Ascend 960DT delivers competitive performance, it could reduce reliance on Nvidia for Chinese AI companies and potentially offer an alternative supply chain for global builders facing Nvidia shortages or pricing pressure. Wang also positioned the Ascend family as foundational for China's agentic AI and AGI ambitions, though details on software stack and ecosystem support were not provided.
Caveats and unknowns
The Ascend 960DT is not yet released, and all performance claims come from Huawei. No independent benchmarks are available. It remains unclear how the chip compares to Nvidia's Blackwell GPU, which Jensen Huang expects to double sales in 2027. Pricing, availability outside China, and software ecosystem maturity are also unknown.
For now, the roadmap is a signal of intent. Builders should monitor independent testing and software support before making hardware decisions based on these claims.
