Overview

VoltHacks is a hardware and IoT oriented hackathon focused on building real world solutions that bridge software with physical devices. Participating teams are encouraged to go beyond traditional software projects and create systems that interact with the world through sensors, embedded electronics, automation, robotics, and intelligent devices. The event welcomes a wide range of interests from robotics and smart devices to sustainability, healthcare technology, and open innovation. Hackers of all skill levels are invited to learn, collaborate, and build meaningful projects with real world impact.

Tracks

Projects can align with multiple tracks such as:

  • Robotics and Embedded Systems
  • AI + Hardware Integration
  • Smart Health Technology
  • Sustainability and Smart Cities
  • Open Innovation
  • Anything Engineering based with Impact These tracks help organizers and judges categorize submissions and recognize diverse engineering approaches.

Get Started

Participants should register individually or as a team, brainstorm a project idea linked to the challenge themes, build during the hackathon, and submit on Devpost before the deadline. VoltHacks is designed to be inclusive and welcoming to all skill levels, including those new to hardware.

Schedule and Dates

The event runs from late May through early September, with the deadline for submissions in early September. The program includes project development time, mentor check-ins, and a final judging phase where teams present to a panel of judges.

Prizes and Recognition

Prize details include a Grand Prize award with substantial cash value and additional prizes such as subscriptions or hardware credits. Notable projects may receive lifetime subscriptions or cash value equivalents. The Dragons of the event are local and remote mentors and judges who evaluate submissions based on innovation, technical depth, real world impact, design quality, and presentation.

Judges and Mentors

A panel of judges with diverse expertise in engineering, hardware, and technology evaluates submissions. Judges come from academia and industry and assess projects for originality, feasibility, and potential impact. Some participants may be recognized by additional awards or special mentions.

What to Submit

Each entry should include the project name and a short description, an explanation of the problem solved, photos or prototype images, source code or repository (if applicable), and a list of technologies used. Teams should clearly convey how their project works and what makes it innovative. Submissions should demonstrate the functionality and potential real world usefulness of the solution.

Who Should Attend

VoltHacks welcomes students, hobbyists, professionals, and teams from various backgrounds who are excited to learn, collaborate, and build. Whether you are highly experienced with hardware or just starting out, VoltHacks is a place to grow your skills, meet peers, and bring ambitious ideas to life.

FAQ

  • Is VoltHacks online or in person? Online attendees are welcome and projects can be showcased remotely.
  • Do I need a complete project to participate? No, ideas and early prototypes are encouraged, with emphasis on learning and collaboration.
  • What kinds of projects are allowed? Hardware, IoT, AI, and combined hardware-software projects aligned with the stated tracks are welcome.
