OpenAI's head of data centers, Chris Malone, left the company last week, adding to a growing list of senior departures that now exceeds a dozen in 2026. The exit comes as OpenAI reorganizes its infrastructure leadership and prepares for a potential 2027 IPO, raising questions about execution risk for its massive data center buildout.

Malone joined OpenAI in March 2025 after nearly five years at Meta and more than a decade at Google, making his tenure roughly 17 months. He oversaw execution of the company's data center strategy, including its role in the Stargate Project, a $500 billion data center initiative with Oracle, Nvidia, SoftBank, and Microsoft. The reason for his departure is not entirely clear, according to reporting from the Wall Street Journal and TechCrunch.

Before Malone left, OpenAI had already reorganized its infrastructure organization. Malone stopped reporting directly to OpenAI President Greg Brockman and began reporting to Vice President Sachin Katti, who now leads the data center group. Other leaders overseeing data center strategy include Uday Ruddarraju (data center team lead), Brent Mayo (build and delivery program lead), and Spas Lazarov (data center engineering lead). OpenAI said in a statement that it has "a strong, deeply experienced data center team in place, with clear leadership and the technical expertise to execute our plans."

Infrastructure execution risk rises with leadership churn

Malone's exit is part of a broader pattern. Business Insider tallied 13 executive departures at OpenAI in 2026, with several leaving in just the last month. Recent exits include Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser (after eight months), COO Brad Lightcap, product and business chief Fidji Simo, head of ethics Chloe Bakalar, and CMO Kate Rouch. The company also disbanded its preparedness team, which assessed catastrophic risks from AI models.

For AI builders, the concern is not about immediate API availability but about long-term infrastructure execution. Data center buildouts involve multi-year planning, complex hardware procurement, and partnerships with energy providers and construction firms. Leadership turnover in this critical function can slow decision-making, delay capacity expansions, and create uncertainty about future model training and inference capacity. OpenAI's ability to scale its infrastructure directly affects API latency, pricing stability, and access to next-generation models.
