
Hypercubic raises $5.3M to rewrite legacy COBOL apps with AI agents

Hypercubic Inc. has raised $5.3 million in seed funding to automate the modernization of legacy COBOL applications using AI agents. The startup claims its agents can map undocumented codebases, recover hidden business logic, and rewrite functions into modern languages like Java in months instead of years.

The agents first map the entire COBOL codebase, recovering business logic that has never been documented. They generate documentation and then produce a modern equivalent designed to preserve production behavior. Co-founder Sai Gurrapu told SiliconANGLE that "the problem is not simply translating COBOL syntax" but recovering decades of embedded logic and proving the replacement works in production. The agents are powered by models trained on massive volumes of COBOL code and use production-aware verification to ensure correctness.
Funding and team
The seed round was led by CIV with participation from Y Combinator, Afore Capital, Pioneer Fund, Multimodal Investors, and angels including Opendoor CEO Kaz Nejatian and former Amazon Marketplace engineer Venky Harinarayan. The founders are former Apple engineers Sai Gurrapu and Aayush Narik.
Pilot deployments and what's still unproven
Hypercubic is already working with one of the largest banks in Latin America and a Caribbean retailer serving over 50 million customers annually to revamp critical applications. The company claims its agents can fully modernize legacy apps in a couple of months, compared to years for manual transformation.
These claims are vendor claims, not independently verified. The pilots are early, and Hypercubic has not published benchmarks or detailed case studies. COBOL modernization involves more than code translation: it often requires redesigning data architecture, storage, and transaction processing. Hypercubic's approach focuses on the code layer, but full modernization may require additional work.
For builders evaluating COBOL modernization tools, Hypercubic's approach is worth watching but not yet proven at scale. The funding suggests investor confidence, but the real test will be whether the agents can handle the complexity of production mainframe systems without introducing regressions.
